這些紅字就是所謂的代名詞。代名詞的出現是為了給作者和讀者一個方便，所以用一個簡短的名詞來代替那些已經在前面出現過的字。也就是說讀者可以從代名詞開始往前尋找那個被替代了的字。
拿 this 來說，我們可以從它所在的位置往前找相關的意思。當this被當作主詞時，通常意味著前面講過的某個動作或做的某件事情。因此，我們往前尋找的應該是帶有動詞的一小段話。

看上面的例子，我們找到的是supervise the progress in the technical area這件事。再把這段話帶入this所在的句子，就會變成：

同樣的方式也可以用在 it 上。

這個 it 如果只往前找名詞的話可能會無法解讀。如果一樣往前找帶有動作的一段話就能夠解讀了。所以我們找著的又是 supervise the progress in the technical area。帶入 it 所在的句子就會變成：
but your efforts on the time line and other projects indicate to me that you are capable of supervising the progress in the technical area.
同學可能會問我說為什麼知道要找動作而不是名詞呢？這得要看 be capable of 這個片語的特性。be capable of的意思是有能力去做某事，也就是說 of 後面通常都是接動詞的。
